Privacy Policy
The short version
VIN Decoder & Recall Check does not collect, store, transmit, or sell any personal information. It has no accounts, no analytics, and (in this version) no ads or advertising SDKs. The camera is used only to scan a VIN barcode on your device — no photo or video is ever saved or uploaded. Your lookup history stays on your phone.
1. Who we are
This Privacy Policy applies to the VIN Decoder & Recall Check Android application
(package name com.auto.vindecoder, the “App”),
published by Hindustan Prime (“we”, “us”, “our”),
a partnership firm registered in India.
2. Data we do not collect
The App does not collect, store, or transmit:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or any account credentials — the App has no sign-up or login
- Your device identifiers (advertising ID, IMEI, MAC, Android ID, etc.)
- Your precise or approximate location
- Your contacts, photos, files, calendar, or microphone
- App-usage analytics, screen views, click events, or session recordings
3. Camera and barcode scanning
If you use the “Scan” feature, the App requests camera access to read the VIN barcode from a vehicle's door-jamb sticker, windshield corner, or registration/insurance card. Barcode detection happens entirely on your device using on-device ML Kit processing. No photo, video frame, or camera image is ever saved, stored, or uploaded — only the decoded VIN text is used, and only after you grant camera permission.
4. Data stored locally on your device
The App stores the following on your phone only (in Android SharedPreferences). This data never leaves your device:
- Your recently looked-up vehicles (VIN, make, model, year, trim) — up to 25 entries
Uninstalling the App or clearing its data from Android Settings permanently deletes all of the above.
5. Network requests we make
To decode a VIN and check for safety recalls, the App sends the VIN you enter or scan to NHTSA (the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), a public U.S. government agency. The App does not send any identifying information about you in these requests — only the VIN itself.
- vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov — NHTSA vPIC API, vehicle specification lookup
- api.nhtsa.gov — NHTSA Recalls API, open safety recall lookup
Standard HTTP metadata (IP address, user-agent) may be logged by NHTSA as part of their normal server operation; we have no access to those logs. These are public government APIs and do not require an API key.
6. Permissions used
INTERNET— to send your VIN to NHTSA and retrieve specs/recall dataCAMERA— to scan a VIN barcode, only when you tap “Scan” (see Section 3)ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE— to check whether you're online before making a request
The App does not request access to location, contacts, photos/media, microphone, SMS, or call logs.
7. Advertising
This version of the App does not display ads and does not include any advertising SDK. If a future version adds advertising (for example, Google AdMob), this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the update will describe what advertising identifiers or data the ad SDK collects.
8. Children
The App is rated for general audiences and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
9. Security
All network requests are made over HTTPS (TLS). Because no personal data is collected or transmitted by us, there is no central server of ours to compromise.
10. Third-party services
The App does not embed any third-party analytics, attribution, crash-reporting, or social-login SDK. The only outbound network traffic is to the public NHTSA APIs listed in Section 5.
11. Your rights
Because we don't collect personal data on our servers, there's nothing for us to access, correct, export, or delete on your behalf. You can delete all local data at any time by uninstalling the App or by going to Android Settings → Apps → VIN Decoder & Recall Check → Storage → Clear data.
12. Changes to this policy
If we materially change this policy — for example, when adding advertising in a future version — we will update the “Last updated” date above.
